This past Thursday night, October 15, the Good Twins were at BBC in concert. Dwight and Dwayne were born in nearby Ludlow IL. They have sung professionally since 1958, and have been gospel singers their entire lives.

The first picture is, from left: Wendell Good (older brother), Dwayne Good, my wife Ingrid, and Dwight Good.

This is Dwight (on the left) and Dwayne singing a hymn acapella after their CD player rebelled and refused to work properly. Even at age 73, the guys still sing well, and the harmony is terrific. It was a pleasure to have them at our church.

This is Greg and Mary Dowell. They were part of the BBC church family when I joined in 1987. Greg and Mary worked with the youth, and in many other areas of church. Greg would fill the pulpit when our pastor was away, or any other time that the pastor would give him. They left for further schooling in Lynchburg VA in 1989. This picture was taken yesterday at my aunt's home. As a result of finding several BBC members on Facebook, Greg and Mary came to Rantoul to renew acquaintences. It was wonderful to see them again. Greg has been the pastor of his current church for six years. They have 5 kids, 2 boys and 3 girls. Wonderful to see them again.

I am reading two books. I continue with Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges. It is easy to read, but very convicting. The other is Worship Matters by Bob Kauflin. He has many good thoughts and ideas. I have much to still learn. I heartily recommend both books.

I have started the book "Respectable Sins" by Jerry Bridges. I've made it through 2 chapters so far. Some notes I have made:

Chapter 1: The biblical meaning of the word 'saint'; someone whom Christ bought with His own blood on the cross and has separated unto Himself to be His own posession. It is not a staus of achievement and character but a state of being. We are responsible to live as saints daily. But many times we do not. The author calls it 'conduct unbecoming a saint.' That is called SIN.

Chapter 2: The idea of sin has virtually disappeared from our culture. Not so much from our churches, but we tend to focus on flagrant sin; abortion, homosexuality, murder, etc. We seem to be more concerned with the sins of society, than the sins of the saints...we indulge in 'respectable' sins without the sense of sin. But the law of God is seamless. The Bible speaks not of God's 'laws,' as if many, but of God's 'law,' as a single whole. All sin is a breaking of God's law. Sin is Sin. Even the so-called 'acceptable sins of the saints'--the sins we tolerate in our own lives--are serious in God's eyes. The seemingly 'minor' sins we tolerate in our own lives do indeed deserve the curse of God. All our sin is horrible, and deserving of God's judgment.

Feeling convicted yet? Or is it just me?

January 18, 2009

Don Wilson opened in prayer.

1) Meetings will be scheduled once per quarter on third Sundays (except for no meeting in July; the meeting will be the third Sunday in August). The next meeting will be April 19, unless a special session is called earlier.

2) Spiritual Life Conference: A check for $1000 will be sent to Darryl & Karen Savage for air transportation. They will also receive a $300 honorarium. Several possibilities for a meal were discussed, including catering, or potluck.

Darryl Savage is speaking for the '09 conference on Sept. 13; Dr. Mike Peck is our speaker in 2010. Speakers are need for 2011 and beyond. Possibilities: members of the theology dept. at Moody Bible Institute; Berd Taylor, who was interviewed recently on the local Moody affiliate radio station; work is ongoing.

3) Upcoming musical presentations: Easter is April 12. Carolyn Wilson will prepare several songs for the choir to sing on that day, with rehearsals to begin March 15. It was stated that this year, the Fifth Sunday activities are a potluck after the AM service, with no PM service.

4) A suggestion was made to have focused prayer for 5 or 6 families in the church each week, to be printed in the bulletin, or perhaps done during the AM Service.

5) Jane volunteered to coordinate special music for services.

Advice from D.L. Moody

I was doing some cleaning and sorting today when I came across a handout I picked up in 2005 at our denomination's Fall Conference, which our church hosted. In today's fast-paced world, these may seem old-fashioned, but they are worth striving for.

Advice for Christian Workers by D.L. Moody

1. Have for constant use a portable reference Bible, a concordance, and a topical textbook.
2. Always carry a Bible or Testament in your pocket.
3. Do not be afraid of marking it or making marginal notes.
4. Set apart time each day for study and meditation.
5. Always seek God to open the eyes of your understanding.
6. Cast every burden of doubt upon the Lord.
7. Believe in the Bible as God's revelation to you, and act accordingly. Reverence all Scripture.
8. Learn at least one verse of Scripture each day. Verses committed to memory will be wonderfully useful in your daily life.
9. Try at any cost to master the Bible. You ought to know it better than anyone in your congregation or class. Adopt a systematic plan for Bible Study and strive to be exact in quoting Scripture.
10. Always practice Ezra 7:10: Prepare your heart to study and obey the way of the Lord.

A challenge to each of us. May we take these to heart as we persevere in the service of God.

Worship Matters by Bob Kauflin
Respectable Sins: Confronting the Sins We Tolerate by Jerry Bridges

The first book is written by a well-respected worship leader and teacher. I anticipate learning much about the role of a leader of worship from this book.
The second book was recommended by Pastor Steve to the congregation a little over a month ago. I am looking forward to reading this book and being instructed and confronted with things that maybe I have allowed to enter my life, that should not be there. I will share with you my thoughts on these books.

Resolutions

This past Sunday Pastor Steve preached a message entitled "Worthy Resolutions for 2009."
The text was Jude vv. 17-23, keying on v. 20-23. Here are some key points:

1. Commit to pursuing spiritual growth (v. 20)

Jude urges us to CONTEND FOR THE FAITH
To do that we must know the scriptures and build ourselves up. 2 Timothy 2:15

2. Commit to obeying Jesus.................for the long haul (v. 21)

We must live in such a way as to receive the love that Jesus already has for us. He does not move from us; we move away from Him when we sin.

3. Commit to assisting others in their spiritual growth (v. 22-23)

When we were joined to Christ, we were also joined to all the other redeemed members of His Body.

Good resolutions for each and every year, not just 2009.

2008 in Review

Several new songs were added to our church singing, and we had positive reactions to special services such as the Spiritual Life Conference with Burt Kettinger, the Thanksgiving Praise Service, and our Christmas choir presentation entitled "A Christmas Offering."

Good things are happening, and we hope, by God's grace, to continue following the leading of the Holy Spirit in regards to the worship life of our church.

Has a new chapter of the Bible been discovered?

I found this on another blog that I visit from time to time titled The Gladness of My Rejoicing. A link is found to the right on this page. The entry reported on the "discovery" of an entire chapter of 1 Corinthians that, until now, has been missing. As you read it, you will realize that our church does very well concerning the topic addressed in this new "chapter." Pastor Steve does an excellent job in saying what needs to be said, then focusing us upon the proper worship of God. Here it is:

Chapter 17
Now concerning announcements, I do not want you to be ignorant brethren. When announcements are given, let there be only two or three and let them be given in order. Let the announcements be brief. Otherwise, those who are new worshipers and unschooled in the way of announcements, will they not say you are mad? It is better if announcements are written down and submitted to the church office so that the staff may make them. Are announcements more important than congregational singing or preaching? May it never be! Therefore, use your announcement time wisely and thus maintain a suitable balance in the service.

Let him who gives an announcement be careful lest he fall into temptation and a snare. Truly each one who gives an announcement considers his information to be holy. When giving his announcement, a spirit of rambling may overtake him and he may begin speaking in an unnecessary tongue. Let every man who makes an announcement pray that his announcement may be brief and to the point. Such announcements are edifying to the church. Earnestly desire such announcements, but especially that you may read the bulletin. Announcements are of some value but the bulletin is greater. For now we announce in part and we know in part. But the bulletin gives full and detailed information so that your knowledge of ministry happenings may be complete. One who makes an announcement edifies a particular ministry. But the bulletin edifies the whole church. So then my brethren, listen to the announcements but do not neglect the bulletin.

The man who wrote this admits that this comes from his imagination; something along the line of an announcement problem at Corinth that became an issue. Alllllll right.

I believe the announcements are handled very well at BBC.
